Yıldız Technical University (YTU) is one of the seven public universities situated in İstanbul besides being the 3rd oldest university of Türkiye with its history dating back to 1911.

Rabia Çakır Koç

Associate Professor Doctor Rabia Çakır Koç has been a lecturer at Yıldız Technical University (Türkiye) since 2017. She earned her M.Sc. in Bioengineering and her Ph.D. in Bioengineering at the Yıldız Technical University, Türkiye. From 2013 to 2014, she served as Assistant Professor at the Yeni Yüzyıl University, Biomedical Engineering Department where she studied the drug delivery systems for biomedical applications. From 2014 to 2017, she served as Assistant Professor at Yıldız Technical University, Bioengineering Department where she studied biomaterials for tissue engineering and the investigation of these biomaterials using various cells culture techniques. Additionally, she has been serving as the President of TUSEB Turkish Biotechnology Institute since 2020.

She is an expert in biotechnology, especially in the development of vaccine candidates, tissue engineering, biomaterials, and nano/microparticular systems. Her research is based on producing nanoparticular systems capable of controlled release using various synthetic and natural polymers such as PLGA, PEG, PMMA, chitosan, and alginate.

Besides, she works on implantable tissue engineering products for tissue regeneration by adopting the cell-scaffold and biomolecule approach in tissue engineering. Recently, her research focuses on anticancer therapy, neurodegenerative diseases, and in vitro disease models such as drug-resistant cancer models, Alzheimer’s disease, Multiple Skleroz, and Type 2 diabetes.

Cem Bülent Üstündağ

Dr. Üstündağ is an Associate Professor in Bioengineering department at Yıldız Technical University. He received B.Sc. degree in Ceramic Engineering from Dumlupınar University, Türkiye, in 1999, and M.Sc. in Materials Science & Engineering from Gebze Technical University in 2003 and he has a dual Ph.D., in Materials Science & Engineering from Yıldız Technical University (YTU), Türkiye in 2011 and Biomaterials from Tohoku University, Japan, in 2013.

Dr. Üstündağ joined YTU Vocational School and promoted assistant professorship in 2005 and 2011, respectively. He held the UNIDO Technology Foresight Diploma in 2008. He held a visiting scholar position at the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, Princeton University, NJ, 2014-2015. He joined to Department of Bioengineering, YTU in April 2015. Dr. ÜStündağ was promoted to associate professorship in Bioengineering in 2017. He is also the departmental Erasmus coordinator at YTU.

The research interests of Dr. Ustundag include the development of nanomaterials for biomedical applications, synthesis, and applications of graphene and carbonaceous nanomaterials, nanocomposites, tissue engineering, 3D printing, and nanomaterials for environmental remediation.

He currently teaches, ungraduated and graduate level, Biomedical Materials, Tissue Engineering, Mathematical Modeling in Bioengineering, Characterization of Biomaterials, Carbon Nanomaterials and Their Biomedical Application at the Department of Bioengineering.

He has authored/co-authored over 25 research papers, 5 book chapters, 3 patents, and 10 patent applications, and over 100 national and international conference papers.

He received RONPAKU awards of Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) 2009. Dr. Ustundag is the recipient of the JSPS Ronpaku Medal in 2013. He was awarded a postdoctoral scholarship from TUBITAK and Princeton University in 2014. Dr. Ustundag received ISIF (International Invention Competition) bronze medal with “Biomimetic Biomaterial and Production Method Thereof” patent application and was awarded 2nd place in the Academic category 7th LivingLab project competition in 2020.

Hakan Yılmazer

Dr. H. Yılmazer has been working as Assistant Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, YTU since 2015.  Dr. H. Yılmazer has received his BSc and MSc degrees in Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Istanbul Technical University (ITU), Türkiye, and PhD degree in Materials Science, Tohoku University, Japan. He is also co-founder of Bioseratech Medical Product startup company in Yildiz Technopark in the main campus of Yıldız Technical University (YTU), Türkiye since 2018.

Dr Yılmazer was a postdoc researcher at Institute for Materials Research (IMR), Tohoku University, Japan between 2012 to 2015. He is a member of titanium committee of TMS since 2018.

He is supervisor of Biomaterials and Additive Manufacturing (BiomatAM) research group. BiomatAM has researchers from several disciplines and  focuses on bioinert and biodegradable metallic materials and their implants, additive manufacturing, bioprinting and tissue engineering.

Dr. Yilmazer supervising several projects. Currently, he is co-PI of two bilateral projects between Turkey-Russia and Turkey-Pakistan for the development of biodegradable materials and implant for several applications since 2021. He is also conducting PI for a national SME project on the development of a biodegradable staple wire and a stapler device for urological.

Dr. Günay Bulutsuz is a Ph.D. Researcher in Mechanical Engineering Department Yıldız Technical University. She received B.Sc. degree from Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies department from Trakya University, Türkiye, in 2009 and M.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies Department from Yıldız Technical University (YTÜ), Türkiye, in 2011 and   Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technologies department from Yıldız Technical University, Türkiye, in 2017. Afterwards she made her Post-Doctoral study in Institute of Materials Science and Psychical   Metallurgy department, Germany, in 2020.

Dr. Günay Bulutsuz has been working at YTU Mechanical Engineering Department as a researcher since 2010. She also serves as lecturer, advisor and gives laboratory lectures.

Besides, she is a lectures at YTU Manufacturing Department. She is also in Erasmus commission and helps students with international mobility. The research interests of Dr. Günay Bulutsuz include the development of nanomaterials for industrial biomedical applications and their material characterizations.

Besides, modelling new designs and biomechanical behavior is also in her interest area. After manufacturing steps, she is capable of applying various surface modifications to increase the biocompatibility of materials. Up to date, she worked as a Marie Curie scholar in a European Project (BioTiNet) and she carried a small project funded by TUBİTAK. Dr. Günay Bulutsuz has 14 SCI publications and finished 5 national, 1 international projects in her expert area.
